The state-of-the art facility has been designed specifically for coach parties and school groups. With the story of WW2 evacuation and life in the 40s, it has both nostalgic and educational appeal. A tearoom with a choice of menus for parties booking in advance is a welcome addition to the Devil’s Porridge’s facilities. In addition, the attraction will be open all year round for visits. It is well situated close to both the M6 and M74 , only 6 miles from Gretna and easily accessible from both the North of England and Central Scotland.

“We have an amazing story to tell,”says Richard Brodie, head of the 30 strong volunteer force which runs the visitor attraction. “Who would think that on this quiet corner of the Solway 30,000 people worked in the “greatest factory on earth” which stretched nine miles long from Longtown in England to near Annan in Scotland. Our claim is that it is “Britain’s greatest contribution to WW1” on the Home Front, supporting our brave troops with more cordite explosive than all the other UK factories’ put together.

The Devil’s Porridge was the name, coined by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, for the volatile paste which women workers mixed by hand. It looked like porridge, he said, but it was devilish stuff. The women could not wear rings or anything metallic because the least friction would ignite the nitro-glycerin / guncotton mixture with devastating consequence.

The museum is now taking bookings for the summer season. With the centenary of WW1 approaching on August 4th. It is bound to be a popular destination for visitors.

Group discounts are available for coach parties
