Wightlink’s car ferry service takes visitors over to the Isle of Wight in just 40 minutes, making the Island the ideal spot for those in search of a weekend getaway. From spectacular scenery, to rich heritage sites and cosy countryside villages there is plenty to explore by car across the Island this winter. The stunning Ventnor Botanic Gardens are worth a visit at any time of the year. In the winter months visitors will enjoy the peace of the various New Zealand, Australian and South African gardens and terraces, and the magnolias and camellias are already in bloom. Adult tickets are £7.50, or £7.00 with concessions.
The Isle of Wight’s most famous stately home and favourite of Queen Victoria and Albert Osborne House, is open year round. The house, which is located near Cowes, offers a unique insight into one of our most famous monarchs and is well worth visiting off season. Tickets are also cheaper during the winter months, with adult entry just £11.40 per person, or £10.30 with concessions. English Heritage members can visit for free. Walks are, of course, open all year round, and the coastal walk from Brightsone to Niton offers breath-taking scenery of the Isle of Wight’s coastline. Walking along the southern cliff tops walkers can see some of the Island’s most beautiful spots prior to arriving at the medieval Salt Cellar 18th Century lighthouse. With plenty of places to stop and rest, this walk is ideal for everyone.
The Isle of Wight also has a well-earned reputation for wonderful, local produce, and there are a host of eateries across the Island fantastic at any time of year. The Garlic Farm is a must visit, as is Yarmouth’s famous restaurant Isla’s (run by award winning chef Robert Thompson) in The George Hotel. It is, however, just as fun to find a roaring log fire to settle down next to at one of the Island’s many atmospheric pubs. The Traverners, which serves local, season produce, in Ventnor, is a popular dining choice among both visitors and locals. Standard meal is priced between £10-12.
