Beautiful Location and a Friendly welcome at the Theatre by the Lake

The Theatre by the Lake, hailed by The Independent as “the most beautifully located and friendly theatre in Britain”, opened in 1999. It is a short stroll from Derwentwater on the edge of Keswick, amid the magnificent western fells of the Lake District

Comprising of two stages, a 400-seat Main House and 100-seat Studio, the theatre presents up to nine of its own productions throughout the year as well as hosting a variety of festivals and visiting companies, playing to over 130,000 people per year. It is the only Arts Council funded producing theatre in Cumbria and for three years running has been voted the Most Welcoming Theatre in the North West in the UK Theatre Awards.

Summer 2017 sees a wide range of quality shows to choose from, including West-End smash hit comedy Handbagged, which imagines what went on behind closed palace doors at the Queen’s weekly meetings with Margaret Thatcher, Shakespeare favourite As You Like It, and Terence Rattigan’s heartrendingly beautiful master piece After the Dance. In the theatre Studio space audiences can catch a brand new adaptation of Strindberg’s Miss Julie, and the world premiere of American family drama Remarkable Invisible by House of Cards writer Laura Eason. These five plays are running throughout the summer so visitors can catch several in one visit – and with multi-buy deals on offer it won’t break the bank.

We can’t wait to welcome audiences to the shores of Derwentwater for a fabulous summer of theatre.
