Blackpool is gearing up for a spectacular finale to a summer of music with up to 40,000 people expected on Friday 31st August and Saturday 1st September for the annual Illuminations Switch-On concert followed by the final UK tour performance by global pop icon Britney Spears
For those travelling to this year’s Blackpool Illuminations Switch-On on Friday 31st August and Britney Spears on Saturday 1st September, organisers are advising that the viewing of the Blackpool Illuminations display over the weekend will be affected by some traffic disruption on both nights due to the need for safe dispersal of the large crowds after these events.
On each of the nights, there will be a full road closure in place between Central Pier and North Pier from 10.30am, during the shows, and immediately after the concerts on the Tower Festival Headland, which means that cars and coaches will not be able to travel through the full stretch of the Illuminations until late at night.
On Friday 31st August, the night of the Switch-On concert, the Promenade in the vicinity of the concert arena is expected to be closed until approximately 11.30pm to allow for the exit and safe dispersal of the crowds. For those who wish to see the full display by car on this opening night, the Illuminations will be lit until 3am.
On Saturday 1st September, the night of the Britney Spears concert, the road is expected to be closed until approximately midnight. Again, for those wishing to see the full display the Illuminations will stay on until 3am.
On both nights, it will be possible for vehicles to go through the Red Bank Road to Gynn Square and Starr Gate to Central Pier sections as normal once the Illuminations have been switched on by international music star Alfie Boe on the Friday night at approximately 9pm and on the Saturday from 8pm.
People on foot will be able to walk the entire stretch from 9pm on Friday and 8pm on Saturday.
Trams should be able to operate on the full stretch of the Illuminations on both nights from approximately 11pm.
The full promenade will be open as normal from the Sunday night onwards. Joining Alfie on Switch-On night will be performances by Ella Eyre, Jonas Blue, Diversity, DVJ (Diversity Junior), Rae Morris and Club MTV DJs, R3wire and Varski in what is the coolest party in Blackpool’s calendar.
