Visit Kent has set up the Kent Tourism, Hospitality and Transport Guild (Kent Guild) in partnership with Kent County Council, education providers and other agencies to encourage more people to consider a career in tourism. Chief executive of Visit Kent Sandra Matthews-Marsh MBE said: “The tourism sector is one of the few industries to see a growth in jobs over the last few years, and it is set to continue. However Kent tourism businesses are continually telling us that they are finding it hard to recruit and retain staff.
“Few people realise that tourism is a thriving industry, with so many opportunities available. Think about the incredible locations and exciting settings that tourists visit – and imagine working there, and showcasing them to the rest of the world.“Recent research shows that thousands of roles will continue to be created in the coming years to meet our tourism demand, from front of house to senior management positions, so it really is a sensible – and exciting – career path to consider.”
Kent Guild aims to promote a positive image of the tourism and hospitality sector, and to change perceptions of it being only for temporary work. It also aims to support young people interested in joining the sector, and to support businesses in recruiting and developing young people within sustainable jobs. To help people better understand the diversity of the industry, Kent Guild is running two competition through its new Facebook page (www.facebook.com/kenthospitalityguild) to celebrate Kent’s tourism heroes, and to find inspirational stories from people already working in the sector.
The winner of each competition will get:
- A Local Tourism Hero Award Certificate
- Free entry at six Kent attractions of their choice (for two people)
- £50 voucher at Bluewater

Do you know a local tourism superstar? Someone who always greets visitors with a smile and a helpful attitude? An employee at a local attraction who brightens up everyone’s day? A volunteer who always goes the extra mile to make sure tourists have an unforgettable experience?
We want to hear about the fantastic people working in tourism and hospitality, and why their hard work should be recognised. To enter, ‘Like’ and leave a comment on the Kent Tourism, Hospitality and Transport Guild Facebook page wall, titled “MY TOURISM HERO” and share their name, a picture if possible and the reasons why they should win. The winner will be selected by the Kent Guild team.
