Come and visit Wales’ only Shire Horse Society Approved farm on the A487 in Eglwyswrw, between Cardigan and Fisghuard, to meet the Dyfed family of Gentle Giants who have been born and bred at Carnhuan for over 40 years.
The Lewis family first arrived at Carnhuan in 1849 and now in its 8th generation, provide a warm welcome to coach tours who wish to take a step back in time to learn about and meet these wonderful animals that have played a central part in the story of Mankind, going back to the Ice Age!
First opened to the public in 1992 and now in its 30th season, the farm has been televised on ‘Escape to the Country’ and ‘The Farmers Country Showdown’ and has a strong association with the Royal Family, as the birthplace and final resting place of Dyfed Celt, aka Major Mercury, Drum Horse of the Queen’s Household Cavalry from 2008-2021. The family welcomed HRH the Prince of Wales and HRH the Duchess of Cornwall to the farm in 2008 where the Duchess named our then foal, now stallion, Dyfed Merlin.
Offering talks on the family and equine story whilst harnessing the Shires, ready for a photo opportunity or a traditional horse and wagon wide, the farm also hosts an agricultural museum and is home to a growing family of donkeys, llamas and rare breed Welsh Balwen Sheep as well as Hereford Cattle. But the main attraction of course is the 10 Shire Horses and 1 Suffolk Punch who enjoy the hands-on attention from the farm visitors!
A sizeable on-site café is also ready to feed your coach trip with a hot lunch, a light snack or some tea and cakes.
A relaxed step back in time in the shade of the mythical Preseli Hills awaits your coach tour trip, here in north Pembrokeshire.
