Nestled in Helmsdale, North East Scotland, Timespan is a cultural organisation packed with great offerings, including a local history museum, contemporary art exhibitions, and a vibrant array of free cultural events suitable for all ages.
Positioned along the picturesque River Helmsdale, this welcoming space fosters knowledge exchange, sparking curiosity and creativity among visitors. Embark on a journey through the rich history of Helmsdale and the area, from the Iron Age to the Highland Clearances, from the Kildonan Gold Rush to the herring fishing industry’s rise and fall. Learn and discover these and other stories thanks to immersive technology and a dedicated VR room. Engage with the People’s Mobile Archive, a community-led heritage project offering a vast collection of local books and archives for researching histories and family genealogy.
Timespan brings the best of national and international contemporary art to the Highlands. Enjoy the free exhibitions, delve into the public programme of arts and heritage events, and visit the summer 2024 exhibition, “We Move as a Murmuration.”
Driven by the recent bird flu outbreak, the group exhibition brings together artworks exploring the relationships between humans and birds. Over Autumn, they will continue their art programme as part of “Coastal Commons”, exploring the impact of using natural resources in an unsustainable way in the North Sea. Timespan is ideal for families as the Youth Library will offer a calm space for the younger ones to browse and enjoy more than 350 books. To finish your visit, the Timespan River Café is the perfect spot to enjoy a delightful meal while soaking in the picturesque view of the river and our herb garden.
From March 25 until the end of September, the attraction is open every day from 10 to 5 pm and is accessible via bus, train and car from Inverness. Visit the website to discover more. They look forward to welcoming you!
