Be Guided in St Albans

St Albans is the unheralded jewel of Hertfordshire, a 1000 year old city at the heart of English history. Visited by almost all the Kings and Queens since Norman Times, being only a days journey from London. The first battle of the Wars of the Roses was fought in the Market Place.

The City Tour Guides have been leading walks for the past 50 years and are fully trained, Blue or Green Badge guides.

Walks start in the Market Place, in the centre of the city by the coach drop off/pick up area in St Peters Street.

The Historic Walk, lasting about 90 minutes goes from the Norman Market Place , to the Cathedral and Abbey, where the tomb of St Alban rests. On the way is the, unique in England, 15th century Clock Tower. Tudor buildings, coaching inns and many other historic places are to be seen and the guides have some fascinating tales to tell. The story of Alban, Peasants Revolts, Public Executions, the English Pope and Oliver Cromwell to name just a few. They and many other famous people have left their mark.

An easier walk is Amble In The Shambles. This takes about 50 minutes and is on almost level ground. It meanders through the Market Place and includes many of the features in the Historic Walk, including bribery at the ballot box and punishments to fit the mediaeval crimes!

These are just two of the walks available. A joint Historic Walk and Abbey Tour can also be arranged. All day coach parking is within a mile of the drop off point.

The guides look forward to meeting you in this unique and historic city.

St Albans – Great for shopping

Take your groups of shoppers to St Albans for a unique experience, such a change from huge shopping centres and malls. Historic and friendly, the centre of the city offers a lovely ambience for walking, browsing and perhaps a purchase or two. There is a wide variety of top names along with interesting independent shops and the bustling city centre market offers something for all. The atmospheric market is one of the largest in the south with around 160 stalls and takes place on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

The excellent Farmers Market takes place every second (St Albans) and fourth (Harpenden) Sunday in the month. Shopmobility is available in St Albans.

There are also many quality places to stop for refreshments in St Albans.  The City is also home of CAMRA, the campaign for real ale, so you know this is where to be for a good pint. There are many welcoming real ale pubs and a popular beer festival takes place every year. The 2015 Beer Festival takes place from 30 September – 3 October.

The St Albans & Harpenden Food & Drink Festival takes place from 23 September – 5 October and showcases the huge choice and quality of local produce available in the area.
