Shugborough Estate is caring for Hadrian’s Arch

The iconic Arch, seen as you wind down the main drive of Shugborough Estate, is undergoing some vital conservation work during this 10 week project.

The National Trust property, based in Staffordshire, have erected some scaffolding around the monument so that a condition survey can be undertaken to highlight exactly where on the arch need restoration work.

Previous surveys have already shown that corroding iron dowels are causing the stone work to split, so this will be removed and the remaining cracks will be stitched up. Re-pointing of the cornices and removing all of the moss will also take place. This ten week long project will see us carry out a condition survey on our iconic arch.

Built in the early 1760s, the Arch was the first monument built by James ‘Athenian’ Stewart for Thomas Anson. Arch was turned into a fitting memorial for Thomas’ late brother, George Anson, and his sister-in-law, Elizabeth Yorke, and is one of the first things you see when you visit the Estate.

Visitors to the property are encouraged to make the walk up the hill to see this conservation work in action. Once you make it to the top, you will be able to see a truly beautiful view of Staffordshire. Visitors will have the opportunity to have a tour of the project and go up the scaffolding themselves.

Hayley Mival, Shugborough’s General Manager said ‘Hadrian’s Arch is an iconic part of the landscape, and by doing this important work, we are preserving it for generations to come’.
