Lennoxlove, situated just 20 miles from Edinburgh in the heart of East Lothian, is the 14th Century ancestral home of the Duke and Duchess of Hamilton.
History of the House
The origins of the house go back to the 1300s, when it was called Lethington Tower and belonged to the Maitland family, whose coat of arms is displayed above the front door. After the sale of the house in 1682, it was purchased on behalf of Alexander, Lord Blantyre, by Frances Theresa Stewart, Duchess of Richmond and Lennox, on the condition that it was called ‘Lennox love to Blantyre’. In time this name was shortened to ‘Lennoxlove’.
In 1900 the property passed, through marriage, from the Blantyre family to the Baird family of Newbyth. In 1912 Major William Baird commissioned the famous Scottish architect Sir Robert Lorimer to refurbish the house. Extensive restoration was undertaken to various parts of the house including the Great Hall. The 14th Duke and Duchess of Hamilton purchased the house in 1946 and later undertook an extensive programme of redecoration to create a fitting background for one of Scotland’s most important collections of family portraits.
Visit Lennoxlove House and be greeted by one our experienced guides, each of whom has expert knowledge of the history of the house. They will take you around the house and will reveal the vast history, whilst explaining the stories about the artefacts that are held in the prestigious Hamilton Collections.
Tours take place between Easter and October on Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday afternoons. Group tours (maximum of 25) must be booked in advance. Lunch or afternoon tea can be organised by prior arrangement in our 700 year Great Hall.

Transport Links
Lennoxlove House is situated 20 miles from Edinburgh. From Edinburgh take the A1 and leave at the 2nd Haddington exit (Abbotsview). Take the B6369 road signposted for Gifford. Continue along the road through traffic lights and over the small bridge. After approximately 600 metres turn right into the Lennoxlove Estate and follow the driveway to the sign-posted visitor parking area.
Disabled Access
Cars with a blue disabled badge may park on the gravel area near the front door at the south of the house. There is wheelchair access to the ground floor and a lift to the first floor. There are toilets with disabled access on the ground and first floors.
