The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) and BBC One’s The One Show are delighted to announce the return of the Pocket Garden Makeover Prize.

In its second year, the competition is again offering a winner the opportunity to have their small outdoor space, courtyard or balcony transformed into a green oasis by an expert gardening team led by garden designer Chris Hull.

Time spent in outdoor green spaces—no matter how small—can help reduce stress, boost health and well-being, and foster a connection with nature. The RHS and The One Show want to highlight the many benefits of gardening and inspire people to see the potential in their ‘pocket-sized’ outdoor spaces. They demonstrate that with just a few small changes, a soothing sanctuary can be created for people, plants, and wildlife.

The competition is open for entries between Tuesday, February 18th, 2025, and Friday, February 28th, 2025. Applicants may either enter themselves or nominate someone they know whose small space needs a revamp. Entrants will be asked to provide their creative vision for the space and discuss the impact a transformation would have on them or their nominee.

The competition winner will receive a small garden space or balcony makeover for up to £6,000 by an expert landscaping team, including a consultation and design from presenter and landscape garden designer Chris Hull. Chris, known as the host of BBC One’s Garden Rescue and for his creative designs, will transform the small outside space, making the lucky winner’s vision a reality.

Chris Hull, Garden Designer and Presenter said: “Everyone should be able to benefit from a garden space where they can unwind and connect with nature. A well-designed outdoor area, no matter how small, can become a peaceful retreat, a thriving habitat for plants and wildlife, and a source of joy and inspiration. I’m excited to help the deserving winner bring their vision to life and, in doing so, to encourage even more people to harness the power of gardening and create their own green sanctuaries.”

Joanne Vaughan Jones, Editor of BBC One’s The One Show, said: “We’re really excited to be bringing back our Pocket Garden Makeover Prize for 2025 and giving another viewer the opportunity to have their outdoor space transformed into something truly special. We really hope we can all learn some brilliant tips along the way, too.”

Guy Barter, RHS Chief Horticulturist, said: “Small space gardening knows no bounds – think vertical veg planters, colourful climbers for canopy and pot-loving trees and shrubs. We’re delighted to help Chris and the team transform an as-yet unloved outdoor space into a garden this spring.”

Entries close at 5 p.m. on Friday, February 28th, 2025, and the results will be announced on The One Show in May.
