Coventry Transport Museum is home to the world’s largest collection of publicly owned British-made vehicles in the world. Located in the city centre, the attraction highlights Coventry’s importance as a motoring giant, taking visitors on a journey spanning 150 years of transport history.
Exhibits now on display include our Land Speed Gallery where the three fastest cars in the world reside. Thrust 2 broke the land speed record, reaching an astonishing 633mph in the Nevada Desert in October 1983. Thrust SSC broke the record, and the speed of sound, in 1997. Bloodhound is also currently on display, but get there to see it quickly, as plans are afoot to get the vehicle back on the record breaking circuit.
Also on display is a Coventry-built lorry which served the British Army during the First World War and has been restored to its full glory. The Maudslay Subsidy A Lorry Chassis SR 1266 was built in 1916 and used by the Army as a utility vehicle to move soldiers, ammunition and possibly as an ambulance. After the war it was used as a static holiday home by a family in Scotland. Following that it sat derelict and unused for decades.
In 2000 it was purchased by the Coventry Transport Museum and since then it has been given countless hours, thousands upon thousands, of meticulous care and study to bring it back to its original look.
Coventry Transport Museum is a must-visit destination for everyone with an interest in the history or transport.
